AP--A new medication to treat alcoholism could help reduce drinking and anxiety without the side effects of similar drugs, according to a researcher at Indiana-Purdue of Indianapolis, IN.
Harry L. June, a professor at the IUPUI School of Science, said lab tests with rats showed a decrease in alcohol consumption by 70 percent to 80 percent.
The next step, he said, is to get approval from the Food and Drug Administration to begin clinical tests on humans, which could take five years.
"It offers an alternative treatment to alcoholics who may be unresponsive to existing treatments or sensitive to the side effects," June told The Indianapolis Star ...
