Jun. 1--Florida's honeybee industry is threatened by everything from mites and killer bees to a shortage of rural land for hives.
Now the state's 1,200 commercial beekeepers are banding together with others nationwide to fight another kind of threat: federal cutbacks in bee research. The Bush administration wants to close three of the four U.S. Department of Agriculture research labs, reducing the number of scientists from 21 to nine and cutting funding from $5.7 million to $2.5 million.
