Andy Grove was a strong runner-up. Bill Gates was nominated, but didn't make the short list. Rudy Giuliani could have been a contender, but his nomination missed the deadline.
Instead, the first recipients of the $1 million Dan David Prize, a new humanities award conceptually similar to but monetarily larger than the Nobel Peace Prize, are an inventor, a library and a group of geneticists. Future winners could be anybody or anything, from a journalist to IBM to the city of Rome.
