Enclosed is a sample of a vine that needs identifying. It is growing up the side of my house. Should root it out or buy a trellis? Does it bloom? - Laurie Schultz, Chesapeake.
Your vine is Virginia creeper, as identified by Norfolk Botanical Garden curator Mike Andruczyk. It does bloom, but the blooms are insignificant. Blooms are followed by blue berries, and the foliage turns red in the fall, making it colorful.
It is a native plant, and you'll find it growing wild in the woods and up trees throughout the area. I would not allow any vine to grow up the side of a house, for it gets under the siding, between bricks and crawls everywhere it should ...
