Last week, the Michigan House passed legislation that, if passed by the Senate, would allow Detroit residents to decide whether they want their City Council representatives to represent them in districts rather than at-large.
Detroit residents would be able to vote on the matter later this summer.
As I have said often, it makes good sense for the city to elect City Council members from districts. It's the best way to get real representation. The closer residents are to their elected officials, the better off they'll be in terms of having a representative who understands their district and its problems.
