Jun. 4--A new study by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency suggests that every Oregon resident is exposed to elevated levels of several toxic air pollutants, largely from vehicle exhaust, fires and other combustion.
The National Air Toxics Assessment indicates that residents of the four-county Portland area breathe among the least-healthy air in the Northwest. The agency estimates that Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington counties, and Clark County, Wash., are in the top 5 percent in the country for added cancer risk from what it calls "air toxics."
