In choosing Sen. Joseph Lieberman as his running mate, Al Gore is widely thought to be placing some distance between himself and the White House as the presidential race enters a crucial phase. Lieberman was a prominent critic of President Clinton's behavior in the Monica Lewinsky affair. If that were the only reason why Gore chose the Connecticut Democrat, it would be a sad comment on the state of American politics and a dismaying forecast for the coming campaign.
But Gore has in fact chosen a running mate who reflects his own views on issues of substance and who stands for many of the values that Clinton and Gore have rightly defended. Lieberman is pro-choice, ...
