South Africa's white citizens are a curious bunch. Asked about apartheid, many seem to give the same answer: "I really didn't know how blacks were suffering. I never saw how they lived, or heard their stories. And besides, what could I do? I'm just one person."
The defense seems hollow, but it's the same one Americans use today in writing off Africa. It's pretty easy not to worry about people half a world away. And even if you worry, it's hard to do much more than that. After all, what can you do? You're just one person.
