We Americans have a national John Wayne complex. We have a mental image of ourselves as the lone force of good, the sole voice of reason, and the one nation willing to stand up for what's right and - come hell or high water - suffer the consequences alone.
It's hard to quibble with that. After all, our national interest is sometimes not the same as, say, the European Union's or China's. But after Sept. 11, for America to slouch along with the no-one-loves-us-everybody-hates-us mind-set, muttering about how our so-called allies won't help us, is about as cliched as most of The Duke's movies.
