WHAT a depressing week to be a Republican. When the Queen stood on the balcony of Buckingham Palace on Tuesday evening, listening to a million voices singing for God to save Her, she must have known the Jubilee had worked its miracle.
In that single moment she must have realised that the celebrations were not just for the last 50 years but for the next 50, during which her family were now guaranteed to remain at the heart of public life.
