SABAH, the Malaysian state on the northern tip of Borneo, produces timber, oil, gas and rumours. Output of the last-mentioned commodity is up this year. On July 9th the federal government in Kuala Lumpur revealed details of what it claims was a plot to take Sabah out of the federation by force. A prime suspect, the government says, is Mr Abdul Rahman Ahmad, a 51-year-old police officer from Kota Kinabalu, Sabah's capital, who was arrested on july 7th under Malaysia's stringent security regulations. Three other suspects had been picked up on May 25th.
