I have been hearing impaired for 10 years. I have learned through experience and talking with members of advocacy groups that most health care providers know that people in wheelchairs need special accommodations, but are often in the dark when it comes to serving the hearing impaired.
What are some accommodations that a nurse can implement to serve the hearing impaired? Start with an attitude check. Do you want to make your services available to the hearing impaired just to avoid potential civil rights suits, or do you want to serve your community?
