THERE are few stranger conflicts for a correspondent to cover than the proxy war between India and Pakistan in Kashmir.
Despite 13 years of violent insurgency and brutal repression, the Kashmir Valley remains one of the most beautiful places on earth. In the morning the window is open and as you lie in bed you see the reed cutters and fishermen form a willow-pattern through the frame of the houseboat windows: the shikaras, steered by their boatmen, are in the foreground; behind are the bridges and waterways, the hoopoes and bulbuls flying overhead, the willows, the chenar trees and the poplars.
