ABIX via COMTEX) -- Insurance companies in Australia have indicated that wildlife sanctuaries pose too great an insurance risk. They claim uncaged animals allowed to roam free are a risk to the public. The viability of many sanctuaries is now in jeopardy, because renewal of public liability insurance is unavailable, or limited to situations where animals are caged. For most sanctuaries an operating licence is dependent on obtaining public liability insurance. The operator of Calga Springs Sanctuary, near Gosford in New South Wales, says the Australian Government should legislate for activities that carry a risk.
