On October 31, 1999, in Augsburg, Germany, representatives of the Roman Catholic Church and the Lutheran World Federation signed the "Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification." The intent of the Joint Declaration is to show that subscribing Lutheran churches and the Roman Catholic Church can articulate a common understanding of justification by God's grace through faith in Christ. In the Preface to the Joint Declaration, Lutheran and Catholic leaders give thanks to God for the decades of dialogue enabling the declaration to become a reality.
