During college days, this suggestion was often handed down from seniors to novice freshmen: "Whatever you do, avoid taking 101 from the prof who wrote the textbook." In other words, be forewarned that Prof. Smyth's lectures might be just as boring as his book. And heaven help the poor freshman who admits failing to understand a chapter. After all, the professor's prose was perfect, so the defect was clearly in the student's ability to understand.
Though not always the case, sometimes that upperclassman advice held a grain of truth. Mastery of the material alone does not automatically produce a stellar teacher - either in college or in K-12 programs.
