Giving doctors the final say

Doctors are pleased that UnitedHealth Group, a Minnetonka-based owner of more than 44 for-profit health-maintenance organizations nationwide, has acknowledged what we Minnesota physicians have been long saying: Micromanaging medical decisions costs more money than it saves. Doctors and patients working together will make cost-effective decisions rather than health plans needing to pay overseers to second guess them.

Nonetheless, the jury is still out in Minnesota, since UnitedHealth doesn't own an HMO in Minnesota because for-profit HMOs are illegal here. If UnitedHealth has freed its doctors to make medical decisions, how do ...
