When opportunity knocked, River Valley answered in its first appearance at the WIAA state softball tournament in 16 years.
But in the end, that wasn't quite good enough to overcome an even more opportunistic Shawano squad.
After edging Ashland in eight innings in the semifinal game Thursday, River Valley was shut out by Shawano, which scored all of its runs with two outs in the sixth inning to pull away for a 3-0 victory in the Division 2 state championship game at Goodman Diamond.
