Through personal experience, Paula Silva of Wood Dale learned that Christian ministers and other church leaders do not know what to do if a parishioner needs counseling or other help during an abusive marriage.
"I was in an abusive marriage and had turned to my church," she said. "There's a lack of knowledge about what to do."
She and a friend with a similar problem decided to support each other, and the pair eventually formed a full-fledged support group that started meeting in Silva's home.
