Once a nickname takes hold it can be tough to shake.
John Hummel was a young - but not little - left-handed first baseman playing for a Schaumburg Athletic Association travel team. The big kid's work around the bag reminded a parent and Baltimore Orioles fan watching that day of another big first baseman named John.
Actually he was better known as Boog Powell, a power-hitting, Gold Glove all-star during the Orioles' glory days of the 1960s and '70s.
Just like that, Hummel had a nickname.
"He said, 'Wow, you look like Boog Powell,"' Hummel said. "It kind of stuck."
