Jun. 8--A U.S. Senate subcommittee hearing was conducted Thursday for a bill that will attempt to ensure fair treatment of people who for years have leased federal land around Elephant Butte Reservoir.
The Senate's Water and Power Subcommittee considered the Elephant Butte Lease Lot Conveyance Act. The bill was initially introduced by Rep. Joe Skeen, R-N.M., and has been unanimously passed by the U.S. House of Representatives. If approved by the Senate and signed by President Bush, the act would allow 403 lease holders at Elephant Butte to purchase their lots at fair market ...
