RADIOACTIVE material has been found dumped in a Midland street, sparking a health scare, the Sunday Mercury can reveal today. Hundreds of industrial smoke detectors containing americium-241, a uraniumbased chemical, have been discovered in the back garden of a former business in Birmingham. Manufacturers of the devices, which should be destroyed by a licensed nuclear waste handler, say that the amount of radioactive material they contain is low.
But last night health chiefs were urging anyone who has come into contact with the detectors ...
