Frank DeMartin, marketing director for the U.S. consumer electronics subsidiary of Osaka, Japan-based Sharp Corp., was skeptical in 2000 when his company launched a line of pricey TV sets using liquid crystal display (LCD) flat panels instead of cathode ray tubes (CRTs).

Considering the $5,500 initial price for the company's 20-inch screen LCD TVs, he simply didn't expect much buyer interest. Less than two years later, however, flat-panel TVs that size are selling for less than $2,000, and a surprising number of buyers are paying a premium for their inherent space-savings, high-quality pictures and increasingly elegant styling.
