Federal Government Rejects California's Demand for Buyback Deal
The Bush administration has rebuffed California's demand that the federal government buy out 36 disputed leases off the state's coast, a move that could intensify the long- running battle between the state and federal government over offshore oil and gas drilling.
The administration's decision not to extend at this time to California the lease buyout policy that it offered to Florida has set off critics who accuse Bush of granting Florida the deal to aid his brother Jeb's gubernatorial re- election campaign.
