"Hawai'i is a generous state," notes Kelvin Taken, president and CEO of the HAWAI'I COMMUNITY FOUNDATION. The foundation's study of giving in Hawai'i showed that 27.5 percent more of Island households donate money to charity than households on the Mainland.
The average gift per household, $1,016, runs the same as the Mainland average. But since more households give, the average gift per household is much greater.
"In addition, we have a great tradition of volunteerism," says Taketa. "It seems like everyone volunteers, at least for their hula halau or children's soccer team."
