ABIX via COMTEX) -- In December 2001, the Australian Government enacted the "Health Privacy Guidelines". These came into being under the Privacy Act and were brought in to cover access rights and privacy rights for medical records. While the ownership of the records has not passed to patients, their rights of access have increased. The medical profession has a tradition of safeguarding patient confidentiality, something that the doctors do not want compromised by committing records to new technologies.
