The issue was debated at the Regulatory Committee on Geographical Indications and Designations of Origin on May 16 but no opinion was expressed. There were 47 votes in favour of the Commission proposal, 23 votes against and three countries abstained. Portugal, Belgium, Greece, Spain, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Sweden and Finland supported the legislation. Unsurprisingly, Germany, Denmark and the UK voted against with France, Austria and Ireland abstaining.If a measure is to be supported, there have to be 62 votes in favour and vice versa for rejection.
