From the Old Age of Perseus 
 
   1. 
 
   I fell in love with a landscape of stone. 
   The tangle of statuary 
   on the road to Medusa's hideout 
 
   comprising the twisted remnants 
   of everybody who ever tried to surprise her 
   seemed on my first incursion 
 
   the finest spectacle this world could afford. 
   Having developed a taste for it 
   I set about creating more such stone gardens, 
 
   at the cave of Atlas, at the belligerent wedding feast 
   in Libya, at the court of my ungrateful stepfather. 
   It began to feel like home 
 
   to be surrounded by rock figures with mouths agape 
   caught short while hurling a spear 
   or frozen in mid-leap as they jumped me ...
