In my column last month, I railed against the exclusion of environmental health in the protocol documents now being used by the states to develop their respective counterterrorism response plans. This month, it pleases me to salute an initiative that aims to restore the vitality of local environmental health. As a side note, I find it interesting that the impetus for both projects comes from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. I think the term "mixed messages" applies quite aptly to these contrary indications about the importance of our profession, which curiously come from the same source.
