PARIS -- As a designer, Christian Lacroix has seen huge critical acclaim. As a business, Christian Lacroix has seen nothing but red ink. Every year since its formation in 1987, the house has managed to lose money -- 52 million francs ($9.6 million at current exchange) just in 1989, almost matching its direct revenues of 54.7 million francs ($10.1 million).

The house prefers to cite a volume of 130 million francs ($23.9 million), but that includes the wholesale revenues from Lacroix ready-to-wear that has been done by licensee Genny of Italy.
