Most people don't realise that they are ASCII artists. Every time you type in the simple smiley face :) or wink ;) you are dabbling in an art form that once was the only way to create digital pictures on a home computer.
(One word of warning: the last section of this article covers erotica and pornography. If either topic causes discomfort or offence, or you have been banned from reading this type of material, skip the section entitled `Adult themes'.)
ASCII is simply a set of 128 defined alphabetic, numeric and special characters (see www.ansi.org for more information). In other words, look at any keyboard and you will be viewing the ASCII set.
