At least 50 million women in developing countries are employed in the fishing industry, according to Mery1 Williams, director of the World Fish Center in Penang, Malaysia. These women usually perform low-paying but important jobs such as net making, processing, and marketing. According to Stella Williams, an economist at Nigeria's Obafemi Awolowo University, programs that provide support for women rarely reach out to those who work in fisheries, and fisheries programs have been slow to improve the situation.
