NORFOLK -- A carrier battle group of nearly all Hampton Roads-based sailors and ships will leave Thursday to begin a six-month overseas deployment that likely will take most to the Arabian Sea and the continuing war against terrorism.
About 7,500 sailors and Marines from nine Norfolk-based ships and seven area aircraft squadrons will be led by the carrier George Washington to relieve the carrier John F. Kennedy battle group, whose return date has not yet been announced.
The Kennedy deployed in early February for what is expected to be a six-month cruise.
