Trendies drop a cool $1 million in The Alley
CHICAGO -- The Alley has billed itself as the alternative lifestyle department store, and the young and restless in Chicago know that if a look is hip, they can find it there.
The store, located several miles north of downtown Chicago in the trendy Lakeview area, has an entrance off an alley -- not a street. Now in its 15th year of business and its third year at its alley location, it does about $1 million in business a year. Ten percent of overalls sales are in footwear, according to owner Mark Thomas.
Thomas does not exactly portray the part of hip store owner, due to his traditional look, but he is well known in the music ...
