Jun. 15--DEERFIELD, Mass.--In the 1960s, when young folks were unruly and the Beatles wanted to hold your hand, an idea took hold that changed home decor and gift-giving. Put a scented candle into a glass jar, light the candle, and the result is an olfactory delivery system that, depending on the scent, could evoke memories of Christmas trees and school vacations.
Yankee Candle Co. did not invent the jar candle, but by taking a Ben & Jerry's approach to fragrance, it helped make jar candles fashionable.
At first, the Deerfield company only made candles sold by others.
