South walls obviously are suitable for many kinds because they are bathed in sun. They face dangers, however, because when frost strikes, it is often the burning effect of the morning sun, before the frost has thawed from a plant, which does the real damage.
East-facing sites are even more risky for the same reason and also catch some of the coldest winds. So avoid all but the hardiest types in these positions.
