"Will there be a renaissance of Russian theological scholarship?" So asks Hieromonk Hilarion in the July 2000 issue of The Ecumenical Review. (1) The following month, 13-16 August 2000, the Jubilee Bishops' Council of the Russian Orthodox Church issued two important theological statements: an ecumenical document entitled "Basic Principles of the Attitude of the Russian Orthodox Church towards the Other Christian Confessions" (2), and a very extensive social statement, "Bases of the Social Concept of the Russian Orthodox Church".
