For that will mean Brazil's braves have been beaten and that, 36 years on, a new generation of England heroes are ready to roar out their defiance to the world.

So far, so fantastic. Sven's men have done a thoroughly professional job while giving the impression that the midfield engine in particular can be cranked up a gear or two.

There is still more to come from David Beckham I suspect, and still a whole extra dimension to be coaxed out of Emile Heskey, whose decisive third goal may provide the elixir he needs to lift him out ...
