CAVAFY'S STATIONERY
Accustomed as he was to holding things
Up to the light to see what others missed,
Did he ever peruse these watermarks?
Did Conqueror London make him muse on empires
Once crescent, or Old Hickory evoke
A new world growing into history?
And did he start to dream of warriors
Combing their hair, of their deep sense of duty
--Not so unlike his to his craft ...
