Many enterprises approach network security with what David Flynn, VP of marketing at NetScreen, describes as the "crustacean" model: Hard on the outside, soft on the inside. In other words, they pay close attention to the network perimeter, but little heed to what's going on behind that demarc.
But increasingly, security experts and vendors are encouraging enterprises to toughen up that soft interior, using solution sets that have various names, including "fire-cells" and "interdepartmental firewalls."
