SAN FRANCISCO _ After San Francisco Superior Court Judge James Warren threw out the unprecedented dog-mauling murder conviction, legal experts took him to task for letting a jury deliberate the charge in the first place.
Marjorie Knoller was the first person convicted in California of murder in connection with a fatal mauling, for the January 2001 death of Diane Whipple. Warren decided Monday that prosecutors did not present enough evidence that Knoller knew walking her dogs would result in someone being killed.
