Distortion during machining of forged block is a major cause of increases in the number of operations during machining, time and effort spent on straightening (when allowed), and rejection of parts due to the inability to fit dimensionally within the design envelope. In aluminum 7050-T7452 forged block, residual stresses leading to distortion during machining cost the Boeing Company millions of dollars in excess manufacturing time, schedule overruns, and scrapped material.
