While the oil and gas market has had few eyebrow-raising mergers so far this year, there are indications that the sort of colossal dealmaking that defined the late 1990s could be due for a revival.
In particular, a number of oil concerns-in particular, the Spanish-Argentine company Repsol YPF SA, Texas-based Anadarko Petroleum Corp. and Canada's largest homegrown oil company, EnCana Corp.-could be lucrative targets for ambitious companies, some top energy bankers speculated. If one of these companies gets purchased, it would be a major boost for both the acquirer as well as the bankers lucky to get a piece of a possible $8 billion or greater deal.
