Back in the dark reaches of the early 20th century, "blockbuster" was an ominous word. It signified a huge bomb capable of blasting away a whole city block of buildings. These days, it's a fairly nonviolent citizen of the dictionary, denoting at worst a video-rental chain and-- at its most polite--a museum exhibition expected to attract lots of visitors. And since large crowds mean more money to mount more blockbusters, they sometimes seem to be taking over museums. The trouble with blockbusters, though, is that they tend to recycle a familiar lineup of bankable masters.
