The Idaho ground squirrel (Spermophilus brunneus) is an endemic species that today inhabits five Counties in west-Central Idaho. Two morphologically, geographically, and phenologically distinct subspecies have been described. The northern subspecies, S. b. brunnevs, inhabits xeric meadows at 1150-1550 m elevation in Adams and Valley Counties, and the southern subspecies, S. b. endemicus, inhabits xeric meadows at 670-975 m in Gem, Payette, and Washington Counties. Currently, the southernmost population of S. b. brunneus is located 48 km north of the northernmost S. b. endemicus population.
