The northern Idaho ground squirrel (Spermophilus brunneus brunneus) has declined precipitously throughout its range over the last twenty years (Gavin et al. 1999), and is now listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act. The decline is apparently due to a suite of factors related to long-term habitat change: closing of corridors between populations, forest encroachment on meadow sites, and a change in plant species composition in meadows. In a long-term study at a single site (Squirrel Valley), Sherman and Runge (manuscript in preparation) developed detailed demographic information about a declining population of Idaho ground squirrels.
