Joseph Finkelstein had an eye for cars, a head for business and the soul of a post-Modernist.

In 1916, he saw some of the nation's first cars come off Ford's production lines and decided that at some point car owners would need to buy and replace bumpers, headlights and running boards, none of which were included with a new car.

Finkelstein already owned a hardware store, but decided to move into the auto parts business.

Finkelstein with his brother-in-law opened Miller Auto Parts on East 9th Street and 3rd Avenue in Manhattan in 1916, named for his brother-in-law.
