Al Hoffer thought his customers had ant problems 10 years ago, but that was before white-footed ants invaded south Florida.
"Now everything else pales in comparison," says Hoffer, of Al Hoffer's Pest Protection in Coral Springs. "White-footed ants illustrate the iceberg theory: What you see is about one-tenth of what's really there."
Like an army moving through a building, white-footed ants can number in the tens of thousands in one location. A persistent problem for at least five years, white-footed ants arrived from Asia more than a decade ago and flourished in the subtropical south Florida climate.
