The major cigarette manufacturers have made their scheduled payments to the states under the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement. According to the National Association of Attorneys General, this latest industry payment will total nearly $5 billion.
Philip Morris U.S.A. used the opportunity to urge states to devote a significant portion of the settlement payments to programs effective in preventing youth smoking. In 2001, the states allocated $637.2 million from the tobacco settlement funds to youth-smoking prevention and other tobacco control activities.
