Can you trust tests used to identify AIDS virus infection?
If you were to decide to be tested for infection with the AIDS virus, two types of tests would be used to make certain the results are reliable.
The most commonly used tests are the ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) and the Western blot. Both test for the presence of antibodies to the AIDS virus.
Antibodies are protective proteins produced by the body to fight viruses. When someone becomes infected with the AIDS virus, antibodies to the virus are produced usually within three weeks to six months.
